IMPORTANCE OF SUNNAH IN THE LIFE OF A MUSLIM

It is trite under the shari’ah that all children in this world are born upon the fitrah (path) of Islam. But unfortunately, some parents turned theirs towards the path of kufr. Similarly, it is trite that all Muslims are born upon the fitrah of the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs (may Allah have mercies on them), it is the ignorance or lack of proper comprehension of the dictates of the Qur’an and Sunnah coupled with arrogance of some Muslims that take them far away from the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) and the practice of his Sohaabah (Companions).

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said in one of his famous hadiths that all his followers would enter paradise, except those who decide not to. The Companions asked him how possible that could be. He said whoever obey him (i.e. those who follow his authentic and verifiable Sunnah with sincerity) would enter al-jannah, while those who disobey him (i.e. those who reject the Sunnah or those who discriminate between the authentic Sunnah from the inspiration of the Qur’an) would have declined free invitation to Al-jannah [ This hadith is narrated by Abu Hurairah, rodhiyallahu ‘anhu and reported in Sahih Bukhari]

There is another hadith in Riyaadus Sooliheen where the Prophet ﷺ corrected one of his Companions not to eat with left hand again. The Companion said: it was not easy for him to eat with the right hand. The Prophet (ﷺ) said "you can't use your right hand or you don’t want to use your right hand"? The Prophet (ﷺ) said: nothing prevented him from taking simple correction except arrogance. [Reported in Saheeh Muslim]

From the above, it is clear that one of the biggest problems of many Muslims today is arrogance. Any Muslim who hears or learns an authentic and mandatory Sunnah and disregards it is suffering from the greatest form of arrogance. In the same vein, such a person is indirectly disregarding prophetic invitation to paradise. As a man, if the fear of you being called "tableegh" is what makes you to continue to drag your trousers below the ankle, you are arrogant. As a woman, if the fear of avoiding free mixing with opposite sex or shaking hands with male friends is what drives you away from using the proper and appropriate hijab, you are suffering from one of the greatest forms of arrogance.

The Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) is as important as the injunctions of the Qur’an. The Prophet (ﷺ) does not speak out of his whims and caprices, he speaks based on inspirations. [Q53:3-4]. Whatever the Prophet (ﷺ) prescribes, we must take them with all sense of seriousness, and whatever he forbids, we must discard them as fast as possible. [Q59:7]

Let us remember that this life is just for the meantime, the hereafter is the eternal life. If you find yourself in al-jannah, you will be there forever. If you find yourself in the other one, it is forever, except in some circumstances where Allah may later remove some people from Hell-fire and put them in al-jannah. May Allah save us from His Hell-fire.
As Muslims, we must swallow our arrogance and tread the path of the Sunnah. In Suratul Ahzaab, Allah says we should not have any other option whenever He and His Messenger (ﷺ) decide on a matter. [Q33:36]

Those fake Alfa who find excuses for their bid'ah and negligence of Sunnah are only deceiving themselves and their blind followers. They can never deceive Allah. Muslims must open their eyes, think properly and know the right path to follow. The fake preachers would not be aided on the Last Day, nor would they be able to aid those who patronize them out of the troubles they would face on that Day.

It is important to relate a scenario on the common form of ignorance and arrogance of Muslims toward the decrees of Allah and His Apostle (ﷺ) these days: One day, I met an elderly man who was telling her sister that his own son who practices the sunnah advised him to leave his beard, the reason being that it is one of the sunnan of the Prophet (ﷺ). The man said he told his son he would never leave his beard, and that he would always shave everything because he was not part of the Ahlus Sunnah. This shows the level of the ignorance of the old man. Such is the level of ignorance among Muslims today. The fact of the matter is that the man does not have any evidence in support of his decision. He just felt that it should not be his son that would give him an advice to follow. If his son whom he sponsored to learn proper Islamic teachings at Madrasah does not teach him the proper Islam, who else should teach him?

The first hadith cited above shows that being a Muslim merely by name is not automatic certificate to al-jannah. Those companions who got certificates of paradise during their lifetime did more than being Muslims by name. They mortgaged their lives for Islam and kept the records of Qur’an and hadith. For us to attain al-jannah, we must practise our Islam the way they practised it. This is one of the main objectives of manhaj salaf (way of the righteous predecessors). It is not even possible for us to match the standard of the Companions, radhiyallahu ‘anhum. We can only try our best. The truth of the matter is that we, this generation of Muslims are not trying at all. Ordinary nisfus saq (wearing the trousers above the ankle), we don't want to comply, ordinary keeping of the beards, we still argue it unnecessarily, ordinary hijab, many of our women are not wearing. Indeed, the end time is here. The companions, radhiyallahu ‘anhum didn’t argue with the Prophet (ﷺ). They used to hear, obey and follow. May Allah guide us all aright and make it easy for us to practise Islam properly according to the Sunnah.
