SOBOLATION SERIES (2): GOOD PEOPLE ALSO MAKE MISTAKES AND THEY ARE TESTED

Last week, I was returning from the Masjid after Dhuhr when I bumped into a group of colleagues who had gathered for some side gossips. We greeted and shook hands and, I was about to leave when one of them pulled me back and the following conversation ensued:

Him: What's the ruling of a woman that doesn't wear Hijab?

Me: She's a sinner for disobeying clear injunctions of the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Him: And her husband?

Me: That depends on his degree of culpability in the sin.

Him: Degree as in?

Me: As in if he supports such brazen act of disobedience of the Shari'ah by his wife or whether he had admonished her several times and she's yet to comply.

Him: OK. Do you know Malam X's wife? Do you know that she doesn't wear the Hijab?

Me: Yes, I do. What about that?

Him: I saw her last week and was terribly shocked and disappointed. In fact, I'd since lost respect for him.

Me: And what did you do about it? Did you bring this to his notice to hear his side of the story?

Him: No. But one would expect that given his deep knowledge of the Deen and steadfastness in the Sunnah, his wife would at least be a Khimaarite. How would he be preaching to others but cannot change his wife?

Me: Is Malam X a Prophet of Allaah?

Him No.

Me: Is he infallible?

Him: Definitely, no.

Me: Is he immune from Divine trials?

Him: No.

Me: Would you claim that both Prophets Nuuh & Luut failed or do not deserve your respect because their wives chose to betray them and pitch camp with the enemies?

"And Allaah sets forth an example to those who disbelieve the wife of Nuuh & the wife of Luut ; they were both under two of Our righteous servants but they acted treacherously towards them so they availed them naught against Allaah, and it was said: Enter both to fire with those who entered." (Q. 66:10)

Him: Auudhubillaah!

Me: I've personally interacted with Malam X and I'm fully aware of his efforts, some of which have yielded positive results while further steps are being taken to achieve maximum results. He's a good man, no doubt but just like Prophets Nuuh and Luut were tested with bad wives, he's equally facing a serious tribulation in his matrimony. In fact, but for the fact that the Hijab issue is his wife's gravest crime, and other considerations such as the close family ties and the children, he would have walked her out of the marriage long ago.

Therefore, do not hold him accountable for that little stain that you saw on his plain cloth and seek Allaah's forgiveness for backbitting him over something you know nothing about.

Salaam alaykum.

Him: JazaakumuLLaahu Khayran. In fact, I feel ashamed and remorseful to have had an evil thought about him.

We shook hands and parted ways.

"O you who have believed, indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon and overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." (Qur'an 64:14)

And, to the stubborn and obstinate wives who refuse to adorn the Hijab, you have worthless Salafs in the wives of Nuuh and Lut. "May you never reach heaven before realizing the truth."
