DO YOU MOCK BEARDS AND TROUSERS ABOVE ANKLES?

By
Ibn 'Abdillah As-sudaisiy Al-Iloori

Keeping of beards, wearing of nisfu saq (for men) and khimar (full hijab for women) are from the mandatory aspects of Sunnah. This is clear from relevant texts without any ambiguity. This is the view of all the Companions رضي الله عنهم without any dissenting opinion, as well as scholars of Sunnah from one generation to another. No one will go against this position except an ignorant person or someone who is following his or her desire.

Let us even assume keeping of beards is voluntary or merely recommended (which is not), is it proper to kick against, discourage or mock the nawaafil (voluntary or recommended) aspects of the deen? This kind of habit is common today among Muslims. Some people would even say, some matters are not really important. This is wrong. All matters of the deen are important, whether obligatory or voluntary. Some people would say: irungbon re bi t'ewure yen" (your beards like that of a goat).

Some people would say it is stinginess that made us to cut our troursers above the ankle. Subhanallah! These are some of the ways people mock the sunnah. It has been discovered that a lot of people who claim to be Muslims mock any aspect of the sunnah that they have developed hatred for without reason, or that which their fake scholars made them to hate.

Where as, many men who mock the sunnah of the beards wouldn't mock polygamy because they like it so much. They pick some parts of the the Book and abandon some parts. A Muslim must not attack, discourage or mock any aspect of the deen. The consequence of this is kufr.

A video recently went viral where a well known Alfa in Ilorin (Dan Boronu) was insulting the Sunnah of keeping the beards. He was lamenting that we don't kneel or bow to greet elders and he said: "e si wa di kinihun pelu irugbon osi" (You now turned to Lion with unfortunate beards). May Allāh rectify his affairs. He must have misled a lot of people by his speech, especially parents who are waging war against their children over adherence to Sunnah. Sheikh Saalih Fawzaan حفظه الله mentioned said:

"So then the one who mocks anything that the Messenger came with, be it obligatory or recommended, he is an apostate from the Religion of Islam. So then what do you think about the one who says, "Growing the beard, trimming the moustache, removing armpit hair, washing the knuckles, these are insignificant things!" This is exactly what is meant by mockery of the Religion of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. When they say this thing, and if they know (it is from the Religion), then they have apostated, since this is belittling what the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) came with. It is obligatory to have great reverence for the Sunnah of the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) and to respect it" [Nullifiers of One's Islam, pg 40-46]
