TAQLEED (BLIND FOLLOWING) IN MATTERS OF RELIGION

On the Day of judgement, Allaah will not take the excuse that it is your father, mother, uncle, sister, husband, wife, principal, oga at the top etc. that did not allow you to practice Islaam according to the Sunnah. You will be surprised that on that Day, those who try to mislead you from Allah's path (be it your parents or any other person) would deny you. They would argue that they did not force you to disobey Allah  and you will not have any defence. Even Shaytaan will deny his own people on the Day of Judgement saying:

(ْ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ لِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ إِلَّا أَنْ دَعَوْتُكُمْ فَاسْتَجَبْتُمْ لِي ۖ فَلَا تَلُومُونِي وَلُومُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ ۖ ٌ)

I had no authority over you. I only invited you and you responded. So do not blame yourselves." [Surat Ibrahim 22, Sahih International]

Let us think about this properly; your parents asked you not to go and play football or swim at pool, but you disobeyed them by playing the ball and swimming at the pool. They warned you not to go to casino, night club and cinemas again; you still managed to sneak out of your room or hostel to attend these unlawful gatherings. But when they asked you to go and trim your beards, bring down your trousers, or not to wear the proper hijab or niqob; you obeyed them. When they asked to use sihr (magic) or follow the them to herbalists; you obeyed them. Who are you deceiving? So, who is at fault; you or them?

If your Shehu asks you to put your hands in the fire, will you put it there? If you can't obey him on that, why do you follow him on his innovations and misguidance? Please take note, may Allaah bless you, that the first step usually taken by deviants to mislead their blindfollowers is to prevent them from seeking sunnah based knowledge. Once they succeed in this mission of putting wool in the eyes and ears of their followers, that is all. Their ignorant followers would never be able to identify truth from falsehood again, except by the Mercy of Allaah.

Imaam al Barbahaaree رحمه الله in his book, Sharh us Sunnah that 'Umar ibn Al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه said:

"لا عذر لأحد في ضلالة ركبها حسبها هدى؛ ولا في هدى تركه حسبه ضلالة  فقد بينت الأمور؛ وثبتت الحجة وانقطع العذر"

There is no excuse for anyone being upon misguidance perceiving it to be guidance, and there is no excuse for anyone leaving off guidance thinking that it is misguidance. That is because the affair has indeed been clarified, and the proof has been established, and the excuses have been cut off

The truth of the matter is that if you had stood your ground firmly obeying Allaah against the wish of any human being, it may be difficult for you in the first place, but Allaah would help you at the end of the day without you having any problem with your parents or any other person involved. But when you decide not to seek knowledge of Sunnah and follow it accordingly, there is problem. When you chose to disobey Allaah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم based on some untenable excuses; you are on your own. The Qur'an says those who promote innovations and instruct people to disobey Allaah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم and those who obey them against the wish of Allaah would be cursing one another on the Day of judgement. In Suratul Ahzaab, Allaah says those who disobey Allaah and His Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم ط in order to please human beings would say;

وَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا إِنَّا أَطَعْنَا سَادَتَنَا وَكُبَرَاءَنَا فَأَضَلُّونَا السَّبيلا

"....Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the [right] way" (Ahzaab, Q33:67)

On the other hand, those that they ordered against Allaah and His Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم would be saying

 َرَبَّنَا آتِهِمْ ضِعْفَيْنِ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ وَالْعَنْهُمْ لَعْنًا كَبِيرًا

"Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse."(Ahzaab, Q33:68)

May Allaah guide us aright.

  1. May Allah continue to guide&guard u,this is exactly what is lacking in most of us,we tend to blame our parents/our spiritual leaders when woe befell us but we ignore blaming ourselves when we disobey them in those things we cherished like sneaking out to socialize.
    I pray may Allah continue to guide&guard us.
