HAVING GOOD THOUGHT ABOUT ALLAH

By

Ibn Abdillah As-sudaisiy Al-Iloori

Having good thought about Allah, especially in moments of His trials and tests is one of the fundamentals of Islam. It is hard to find anyone who is totally free from the evil of thinking otherwise about Allah or not trusting His decrees on matters that hurt us so much (Q3:154, Q48:6). It is an act of indirectly denying qadar and qadaa' (destiny and preordainment) of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.

We want goodness always, and detest adversities. We often forget the fact that life is filled with both goodness and adversities and they are both from Allah (Q29:2). He has His reasons for anything He does and He surrounds every events with His wisdom. When things happen in our favour, we claim the glory and feel so happy and thank Allah. But when it happens the other way round, we start having wrong zhann (thought) about Allah.

Sheikh Muhammad Ibn Abdilwahhab رحمه الله discussed this matter in his Kitab Taoheed. Anyone who is saved from the affliction of thinking bad about Allah in His decrees is highly blessed. The Sheikh mentioned a poem of Imam Ibn Qayyim رحمه الله thus:

وإن تنج منها تنج من ذي عظيمة

 وإلا فإني لا إخالك ناجيا

"If you are saved from it (the evil of think bad of Allah), you are saved from a great calamity. But if not, I can't regard you as saved"
