SHEIKH AMUBIEYA'S ADVICE FOR SALAFI YOUTHS ON QUR'ĀN MEMORIZATION

I have noticed some people have started taking up Sheikh Suleiman Amubieya حفظه الله up on his short video that went viral recently. I saw the video yesterday and I find it very interesting and timely.
He was right in his assertions. He gave a good advice. Let us check ourselves. I noticed that he made the comment on an assembly ground in a Arabic school. He was talking to them as if he was preparing soldiers of war. He was only encouraging the younger generations to focus on knowledge generally and not just the Qur'an. We need to exert more efforts on knowledge and the root of knowledge is the Qur'an.
I can tell you authoritatively, as an insider in the area of Qur'an memorization that the best scholars of qira'ah in Nigeria are from the sufis. This is not meant to praise them. After all, we were told that the khawaarij too were the best in memorization and qira'ah in their early days.
The advice from the video is for us to redouble our efforts to take the place that belongs to us. The sufis have the Qur'an, they don't follow it because they have no regard for Sunnah. There is need for us to strive to strive hard in the memorization of the Qur'an, and intensify our efforts in following its injunctions according to the Sunnah.
The Sheikh was saying we students should focus more on knowledge and move away from all the distractions we have been busying ourselves with. These days, many salafi youths are concerned more about which scholar is fighting which scholar. Although we are still learning, but the truth is that many have been so much distracted by the internal crisis we are facing. The issue of musaabaqah is not new. It is a mas'alah that scholars differ upon even though majority kick against it. But many salafi scholars still approve of it with some conditions. That is a discussion for anothet day. The Sheikh is aware of these facts and I am sure he is not generalizing. Perhaps, if we have the opportunity to listen to full video, we would understand the context of his words better.
The number of Salafees that are serious with memorization of Qur'an and indeed knowledge of the deen as a whole should improve. That is the message. He wouldn't have meant that musaabaqah is the only yardstick to measure expertise in Qur'anic knowledge.
Therefore, it will be unfair to read extraneous meaning to his comments. Even if anyone has a contrary view, the Sheikh still deserves a benefit of doubt that he would never have meant to condemn salafis just for not participating in the just concluded Qur'an competition because it is not a mas'alah that is agreed upon.
I have noticed recently that we love to advise other people. But we see advice that are meant for us as a form of attack. The advice in the video is harmless. Let us benefit ourselves with it. The fact that we are salafis doesn't mean we would be perfect. Admonition is for everyone.
May Allāh guide us all aright.
